Rattan/cane, a spiky climbing plant, is biodegradable and naturally renewable as a crop. It is wonderful for a sustainable development project as the local farmers actually plant rattan in ‘gardens’. Rattan needs trees to grow. Because the trees are left standing when rattan is harvested, the raw material is classified as a non-forest product. It is easy to work with and requires low-cost machines and tools compared to wood.
Sustainability has always been our focus in everything we do. Towards the end of 2021, we started expanding our horizons by trying out different ideas to blend in other sustainable materials easily available in India, along with our core material – Rattan. We have achieved different textures by incorporating materials like Jute, Bamboo and Grass while keeping our focus on Rattan.
